3 Things I didn’t know about the Aegean Sea until I lived in Türkiye for 500 days
The Aegean Sea—oh, she’s a stunner. I spent 500 days living along her dreamy coastline, and let me tell you, she had a few secrets up her shimmering blue sleeve. Here are three things I definitely didn’t know before falling head over sandals for her:
1. She’s That Girl of the Mediterranean 💙🌍
Tucked between Greece and Türkiye, the Aegean is a crystal-clear embayment (fancy word for big, beautiful water hug). Think postcard-worthy views, whitewashed villages cascading down hills, and a never-ending palette of blues that’ll make you question if you’ve ever really seen the color before.
2. Shark-Free? Say Less. 🦈❌
Coming from a lifetime of sketchy ocean encounters (yes, I was that kid scanning for dorsal fins before even toe-dipping), I was delighted to learn that the Aegean’s warm waters aren’t exactly prime real estate for sharks. While the Mediterranean isn’t totally shark-free, this little slice of sea is way too toasty for them to thrive. Translation? I finally swam without my usual Jaws-induced paranoia.
3. Still Water Days = Actual Magic ✨🌊
There are days when the Aegean decides to just... stop. No ripples, no waves—just a perfect, glassy surface reflecting the sky like a real-life Instagram filter. These “still water” days happen when the weather conditions align just right, and it’s surreal. Floating in silence, suspended between sea and sky, was one of the most peaceful, almost spiritual experiences I had in Türkiye.
So, if you ever find yourself along the Aegean, take a moment. Dive in. Float on. And maybe, just maybe, let her work a little magic on you too.
